Change is in the Air

Limited Smoking on the USF Tampa Campus

Communicating the Policy

The success of this policy depends upon respectful behaviors from smokers and nonsmokers alike. Most people want to do the right thing, and smoking is no exception. Given the large number of visitors every day, you may come across people who are smoking in a non-smoking area. Please give everyone the benefit of the doubt and consider one of these approaches:

  • "I'm not sure if you're aware, but USF now has designated smoking areas."
  • "I'm sorry to bother you, but could you please move to a designated smoking area?"
  • "Hey, did you know USF now has designated smoking areas for smokers?"
  • "Keeping everyone's well-being in mind, could you please move to a designated smoking area?"

In all cases, please be polite when making a smoker aware of your worries, and if you can, direct them to the closest designated smoking area or ask them to visit usf.edu/smoking to find one.

If someone refuses to extinguish the smoking material in a nonsmoking area, you may issue a complaint to one the following departments, based on the individual's relationship to the USF community:
