UNITED WAY OF TAMPA BAY

“His grandfather looked me in the eye and told me how thankful he was that I was in his grandson’s life.  Then he said it was me who could be the one to break the cycle of incarceration in his family.”   Dean Brunk, law student, Big Brother

United Way of Tampa Bay success stories like this happen every day.

USF’s 2006 United Way Campaign has launched and runs through January 31, 2007.

The USF United Way Campaign website is online for the Tampa campus at http://usfweb2.usf.edu/unitedway/.  You can pledge online via payroll deduction until December 14, 2006.  Paper pledge forms may be downloaded anytime through the end of January for pledging by cash, check, credit card, direct billing or payroll deduction.

For Tampa staff members on other campuses or without computer access, your area coordinators have paper forms and can assist you with your pledge, just as in years past, or you can get paper forms from HR (SVC 2172).

Please join your colleagues by pledging to support the programs that make our community a better place to live.  What you do really does make a difference.

For more information contact Judy Lowry at 4-5489 or jlowry@admin.usf.edu.

CHANGES TO GABOR'S LONG TERM DISABILITY PLAN

January 1, 2007

As of January 1, 2007, the Gabor Agency will make some minor changes to its 30 / 90 Day Options for disability coverage underwritten by UNUM Provident.

Gabor will continue to offer a full 66 2/3% of salary replacement for most employees, and the Plan will also continue the 11% contribution towards a retirement plan in the event of a long term disability.

The rate for the “90 Day Option” will be $.61 per $100 of salary coverage, and the “30 Day Option” will be $.94 per $100 of salary coverage.  Gabor has negotiated a 3 year rate guarantee – securing these rates through 12/31/09.

Additionally, effective January 1, 2007, Gabor will be making the following contract modifications/enhancements:

  • The maximum monthly benefit will increase from $7000 to $9000 automatically.

  • The cost of living adjustment will change from 3% to 2% annually.

  • The definition of disability will change to reflect 2 years (24 months) rather than 3 years (36 months) “own occupational duties”.

  • The Social Security offset will now include any monies an employee or their family receives as a result of an employee’s disability.

Any employee currently on claim will be unaffected by these changes in the contract.  All other benefits remain in effect, and you can review the draft contract online at www.gaboragency.com .

What do you need to do?

1.    Review your coverage and if you have any questions or wish to make changes to your existing benefit, contact the Gabor Agency at (800) 330-6115 or Human Resources at 974-2970.

2.    If you do not wish to make any changes to your benefit – then do nothing - you will automatically be converted to the new deduction with the first paycheck in January.

NOTE:  GABOR IS NOT HAVING AN OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR LONG TERM   DISABILITY INSURANCE THIS YEAR, HOWEVER, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO APPLY FOR THE COVERAGE, YOU CAN PICK UP THE NECESSARY PAPERWORK FROM YOUR BENEFITS OFFICE.

2006 OPEN ENROLLMENT HAS NOW COME TO A CLOSE

Open enrollment ended at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 19th

If you did not make any changes, whatever insurances you were enrolled in for the 2006 plan year will automatically carry over into 2007. You will not receive an additional confirmation statement, but you are able to confirm your 2007 elections with People First either by phone or online.

Service Center

2006 BENEFITS FAIR

We had an exceptional turnout for our Annual Benefits Fair Wednesday, October 4th. Approximately 1,000 USF employees ventured to our new location, the beautiful Alumni Center, for our “Golden Ticket” celebration.

50 premium prizes were awarded with our Grand Prize- a $1,000 gift certificate to Ideal Image going to a lucky Dee Allen in Computer Science & Engineering.

Everyone attending and filling out a survey may not have won a prize, but at least walked away with a delicious chocolate bar thanks to our generous sponsors: USF Federal Credit Union, ASI-Tricare and TIAA-Cref.

45 vendors were in attendance and University Community Hospital provided valuable $10 bone density screenings, accommodating employees wishing to utilize this service whether they had arranged an appointment or not.

We thank all those who were kind enough to provide us feedback, and look forward to using your comments in our continuing effort to provide events and services that are beneficial to you.

VOTING IN A PUBLIC ELECTION

Tuesday, November 7th is Election Day!  Please remember to go out and vote.  As a reminder, administrative leave for voting in a public election is granted at the supervisor's discretion.  Below is an excerpt from USF leave policy that addresses this:

Voting in public elections (up to two hours when the employee lives at such a distance that he/she cannot vote during the hours the polls are open or when the employee's regularly scheduled hours are equal to or exceed the hours that the polls are open).

For more information, please visit the HR website or contact Beverly Jerry (USF Attendance & Leave Coordinator) at x4-5717.

EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING

As you may be aware, responsibility for employment print advertising was moved to Human Resources in October of 2005.  Since that time, we have completely revamped the look and feel of our print advertising to more appropriately reflect where the University is today.  USF is an exciting, innovative, and creative “employer of choice” and we wanted to be sure that we effectively sent that message to perspective employees!

If you have not yet seen the new advertising format, click here for a sample.

We’re pleased to announce that HR will service the USF community by placing all employment-related advertisements in all local and national publications (i.e., Tampa Tribune, St. Pete Times, Chronicle of Higher Education, LaGaceta, etc.).  We currently work with an advertising agency who professionally prepares our advertisements prior to publication.

This new process has many benefits:  1) it will ensure that all of our employment advertisements are consistent in format and content; 2) it will provide the University with an employment “branding” (easily recognizable and always consistent); and  3) ensure discounted rates by allowing us to take advantage of bulk volume and further discount opportunities provided through our advertising agency.

We can also prepare any employment advertising that you may need for trade publications, journals, or other appropriate publications.  All ad copies are sent to individual departments for final approval prior to placement, along with an approximation of the costs of the advertising.

For more information or for assistance with your advertising needs, please contact Chuck Welsh in HR (cwelsh@admin.usf.edu or x4-0593).
