Urban Design

  • Campus Master Plan emphasis on sustainable practices in land use, energy consumption, conservation, landscape, recycling, and transportation
  • Active member of the Board of Governors Campus Master Plan Chapter 21 Workgroup, to revise Chapter 21 to include more criteria and required emphasis on sustainability for all SUS universities
  • Increased density, infill sites
  • Smaller footprints, taller buildings
  • Preservation of open space
  • East-west orientation of buildings for ambient use of natural light
  • Reduction of impervious area and heat island effect with conversion of surface parking lots to building sites by structuring parking
  • Development to reduce acreage devoted to parking lots (as heat islands)
  • Provide shade for pedestrians & bicyclists
  • Provide connections to disjointed areas and adjacent neighborhoods

Building

  • 3 LEED buildings in progress
  • 3 LEED Accredited Professionals on Facilities Planning and Construction staff
  • Roof replacements with high insulation and reflectivity values
  • Use of sunscreens on southern window exposures
  • Use of high efficiency glass
  • IT networked centralized remote building energy management/control
  • Individual building metering of energy and water use and centralized data collection
  • Life cycle analysis (Florida Commercial Building Energy Computational Program)
  • Standards in building insulation values for walls, roofs, windows, motor and equipment efficiencies, mechanical systems insulation and controls for HVAC and lighting
