Why I Chose USF
I am a first-generation student, and due to both the recession and tough economic times at home, I once wondered if I would even attend a university. USF’s Freshman Summer Institute (FSI) contacted me one month before I graduated from high school and gave me an opportunity to attend USF under the mentorship of FSI. Most importantly the program gave me the economic and educational support I needed to succeed and has now made me a passionate USF bull.
I am currently involved in research with the Criminology Department. Interestingly enough, I’m working with my favorite professor. Together, we’re exploring the judicial disparity between rich and poor juvenile minority groups in the U.S.
Favorite Spot on Campus
Hands down my favorite spot on campus has to be Juniper Poplar Residence Hall. Why you may ask? The dining hall boasts some of the best barbeque I've ever had, period. An odd place to find barbeque I'll admit, but go check it out. You might even find me there.
Favorite Spot off Campus
I'm all about the outdoors and was pleasantly surprised when I first visited USF's Riverfront Park. It’s only five bucks to go canoeing and/or kayaking. Plus they have an open ropes course that’s 55 feet high, open fields for sports and barbeque pavilions!
Diversity and Student Life
What I enjoy most about student life at USF are the students and the passion they have for the university. We all are from different backgrounds, but at the end of the day, the camaraderie of feeling we belong to USF brings us together.
Advice for Incoming Freshmen
Given the ample opportunities available at USF there is no reason why you can’t achieve your goals. Greatness isn't a matter of chance. It’s a matter of choice.
