Meet Our Students - Cherisse

Year:

Class of 2008

Hometown: Pointe a Pierre, Trinidad & Tobago

Major:

Environmental Science and Policy
Minor: Geography

Career goal:

Ultimately, I would like to practice Environmental Law or work in another role that would allow me to work in the field of Environmental Policy.

Did you get a scholarship?

Yes I was fortunate to receive one of the first International Undergraduate Scholar's Award (IUSA) which is only given to two students each year.

Favorite campus hangout or favorite past time in the Tampa Area:

I have really eclectic interests and I will try most activities once, so I love Tampa because it is so diverse. Every area has more to it than meets the eye. Even Ybor City which seems to be dominated by nightclubs, has history and traditional culture. I've experienced so much just being open to all the different activities available from plays at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and listening to The Florida Orchestra to racing down Sheikra at Busch Gardens.

Favorite campus-wide event:

I like Homecoming Week because it's one huge dose of school spirit. If you weren't a USF Bull before, you definitely become one somewhere between going on rides at the carnival and trying to grab beads mid-air during the Parade.

3 things you love about Tampa, Florida, or the United States:

1. I like the variety of activities the Tampa Area provides, you name it and it's here.
2. Coming from the Caribbean, I really appreciate that the Tampa area is usually warm and sunny....I can wear flip flops year-round!
3. It's centrally located and has a modern city feel with historic charm.

3 things I love about USF:

1.  The students- The students at USF are incredibly friendly and laid back. It makes it easy to talk to people. I'm the kind of person who will strike up a conversation with anyone and there are so many different kinds of people here...I never get bored.
2. The campus- The campus itself is gorgeous. I love that even though it's a really large campus, it's not overwhelming...and there is always something to do on campus. You just have to know where to look.
3. My major- The Environmental Science and Policy Program here takes a really holistic approach to environmental education. I've taken courses for my major that have included not only science but philosophy, ethics, law and economics. Every teacher I've had has been amazingly passionate about their field and they make their classes eye opening and leaving you wanting to learn more.

Why USF?...
I applied to the University of South Florida because I was familiar with the school as my sister transferred here in her junior year. When I researched the programs offered, I was really intrigued by the approach to my major and by the Honors College.

Have you made new friends at USF, please share any special experiences or stories?
I have met so many people at USF and I am lucky enough to call them some of my best friends, they make it so much easier to be away from home and family for such long periods of time. They have welcomed me into their families. They have become my advisors and my support system.

Do you have any other special experiences or stories to share about your time at USF?
Last year, my sister and I participated in a Volunteer USF program called Alternative Weekend and I can honestly say that experience was life changing. It involved a small group of USF students spending a weekend in Orlando, volunteering at Give Kids the World Village near Disney World. The Organization provides a week's housing and transport and really fun activities, all expenses paid, for children with chronic and terminal diseases who have been chosen by the Make a Wish foundation. It was truly amazing seeing and talking to these young children and their parents. It was so inspiring to know that I could play a part in making them happy and giving them some fun memories tat would last a lifetime by just sacrificing a couple days out of my life.

Student activities ...
I was a member of the USF Crew Team, and I really enjoyed it. I loved being out on the water and watching the sun come up. It's one of the sports that is not practiced in Trinidad but I hope it gains popularity soon.

Professors ...
I've honestly had a few outstanding professors every semester; Professor Omlor, Professor Mukherjee, Professor Summers, Professor Manougian, Professor Schonfeld, Professor Dieringer and the list goes on. Even though these teachers were outstanding for different reasons, they were all teachers that truly enjoyed teaching and made the effort to help students as much as possible. I've even kept in touch with some of my old professors.

Research ...
I've recently started interning at the International Admissions Office on campus. I hope my experiences as an International Student will allow me to give fresh ideas and new approaches to many of the ongoing projects. I'm also excited to get involved in some of the newer programs that are being started.

Have you done an internship or study abroad experience as a USF international student?
I haven't had the chance to do a study abroad program as yet. I'm looking forward to participating in one once I have completed my core major courses. I would like to be able to enjoy the culture of the country instead of being constantly stressed about my school work. The benefit of being an international student however, is that my whole university career is basically a study abroad experience.

Most importantly, please tell us why other international students should choose USF?
I can't speak for all International Students here, but my experiences at USF have been great and I'm very glad I chose to come here. The school is becoming more renowned and accomplished daily. I love being a part of a University that is constantly pushing itself and its students to achieve more. The University is culturally diverse and accepting. The students here receive a global education.
