Meet Our Students - James

Year:

Graduate Student

Hometown: Accra, Ghana

Major:

Mathematics Education

Career goal:

I have an exceptional passion for teaching and helping others to learn. So, I want to be a teacher and conduct research on issues relating to mathematics education. I am excited about these and look forward to the opportunities that I will continue to have to positively impact my students, as many great teachers have had on me.

Are you a Graduate Assistant?

Yes, I was a Graduate Research Assistant in my first year and now, a Graduate Teaching Assistant in my second year. I teach two sections of mathematics methods courses every semester. These classes are mounted for pre-service teacher candidates in Elementary Education program. I am also involved in a number of research projects with my professors and some colleagues. All these activities are working together for my scholarship in research and teaching.

Did you get a scholarship?

Yes, I had a one-year Provost scholarship for 2005/2006 academic year. Now, I am on Graduate Teaching Assistantship from the Department of Secondary Education.

Favorite campus hangout or favorite past time in the Tampa area:

I hang out by the lake between the Marshall center and administration building (in front of Dr. Martin L. King’s statue). This place allows me to relax as I look at the still waters or the water shooting up. It also gives me the opportunity to observed different people walking between the administration, student’s services building and the Marshall students center.

Favorite campus-wide event:

Multicultural Week &
University Lecture Series
These events provide me with opportunities to meet different people, and also listen to the speeches of different and great people. I was so happy to meet and listen to Bishop Desmond Tutu from South Africa on one such occasion at USF.

List 3 things you love about Tampa, Florida, or the United States:

1. Tampa is a beautiful city
2. Florida has beautiful weather and numerous tourist attractions such as Disney World and the Key West.
3. Busch Gardens is just few minutes walk from USF.

4 things I love about USF:

1. Faculty support: because this is helping me to grow academically and complete my studies in time.
2. Diversity: I like to interact with people from different walks of life
3. Efficient and free school Bus services: because it facilitates my mobility
Weather: the sun shines 365 days a year

James, Mathematics major

Why USF?
I chose to study at USF because of its reputation, diversity and faculty support for students. I always love to study in Florida because of its weather - very similar to the weather back home in Ghana. One other factor that determined my choosing of USF over other Universities in Florida was the unequaled correspondence and the assistance that the graduate coordinator of the mathematics education program in the person of Dr. Gladis Kersaint offered me during my application process.

Student Activities ...
I do attend the African students’ union meetings on campus occasionally, but I am not yet actively involved. Is a great organization but my schedules do not allow me to be actively involved yet.

Professors ...
Yes, all the professors that I work with in the past one and half years in USF are outstanding. One of them that I work more closely with is Dr. Gladis Kersaint. We published a paper together during my first year of studying at USF and I am looking forward to publishing more with her and other professors before I complete the program.

Research ...
Presently, I working on a research project that examines the extent to which the cognitive complexity for fourth grade mathematics assessment for different states are similar. I am undertaking this project with two other colleagues. We are comparing mathematics assessment instruments from 15 states and we will be presenting our findings in a national conference in Georgia in March 2007.

Have you made new friends at USF, please share any special experiences or stories?
Yes, I made new friends at USF and most of them are my colleagues. They are very helpful. One name I like to mention here is Gwen Johnson in the Mathematics Education program with me. Sometimes, I feel I border her too much with my questions but she is always more than willing to provide me with any help that I needed.

Most importantly, please tell us why other students from France should choose USF?
As I mentioned earlier, USF is a great institution to study in, it has a respectable reputations in terms of research and teaching. The diversity and the support from faculty is also very great. It also has scholarship opportunities for deserving students.
