Meet Our Students - Samantha

Year:

Class of 2008

Hometown: Boynton Beach, FL

Major:

Finance

High School: Atlantic Community High School

Career goal:

To receive a degree in Business at the University of South Florida and do a stint in the Peace Corp via the  International Master's program offered at USF. I would eventually love to work for an International non-profit organization helping to alleviate and/or eradicate poverty, economic and health disparities; basically I want to volunteer for a living. Some people come to college to discover and cultivate a career. I came to USF and discovered a PASSION! I came here desiring to be a business woman and I am leaving a humanitarian and activist.

Favorite campus hangout:

The Marshall Center, more specifically "The Spot" also known as the Multicultural Community Office.

Favorite Building on Campus: The Library, many late nights there have created a love/hate relationship between me and USF.

Best place to eat:

The smoothie place in the Marshall Center, where I can get a tasty smoothie and some sushi in between classes.

Favorite campus-wide event:

Stampede of Service with Volunteer USF

Favorite campus tradition: Homecoming

Top three campus activities:

1. Volunteer USF community service projects 2. attending Black Student Union meetings and events 3. hanging out in the Marshall Center

Car, bus or bike:

Bus because gas is quickly approaching 10 bucks a gallon! The school Bull Runner is FREE, dependable and has air conditioning.

5 things I love about USF:

1. the Student organizations
2. Patio Tuesdays on MLK Plaza
3. how beautiful the campus is
4. the multicultural community
5. the memories that I have made here

Samantha, Finance major

Why USF?...
The quality of the business program drew my interest and after further research into their other programs I found interesting (just in case I decided to change my major), the results sealed the deal.

Living the campus life ...
I lived on campus for two years and loved it. Always being a 15 minute walk away from class, friends and food was a luxury when I was so far away from family and familiarity. It also helped me to break out of my shell and build friendships with people who were very different from me. It was fun and encouraged a studious atmosphere because everyone around you was there for the same reason - to get an education.

Student activities ...
I have been involved with Black Student Union, Student Government, Black Emphasis Month planning committee, Volunteer USF, The Multicultural Community, The Minority Business Association and Homecoming. These activities have greatly enriched both my college experience and my personal life. I've learned how to not only lead but follow, also how to multitask, resolve conflict, and think critically. I had fun doing all these things and I am proud of everything I have done at USF. I built relationships with diverse individuals and made life long friends.

Activities ...
I love going to the gym because they have great fitness classes like Pilates and professional equipment. I loved Movies on the Lawn, which shows blockbuster movies before they are released on DVD for free. Going canoeing at Riverfront Park with friends is always fun. Going to concerts that come to the Sun Dome on campus is so convenient. Driving to St. Pete Beach where they have tons of water activities available. And if all else fails there is always Busch Gardens which is a stones throw from campus.

Professors ...
The professors are so diverse and they come from all over the world and the United States. I have so many favorite professors, all of which have helped me come into my on as far as ideals and seeing things from a new perspective. Like professor Toland-Dix who exposed me to the writings of Zora Neal Hurston, Octavia Butler, and Toni Morrison and Professor Karlins whose Business Management class has taught me the importance of making a work place a “worth place.” These two professors are some of my favorites because one they are great educators and two the content of their class was rich with valuable insight and knowledge that I didn’t know I needed to grow.

Metropolitan area ...
Location has opened up many post undergraduate opportunities because so many large and varied companies and businesses have a branch in Tampa, so many graduates do not have to travel far to find a job.

Multiculturalism ...
USF has helped me to become a more culturally sensitive and aware person. I have eaten the food, witnessed the traditions, and heard the first hand accounts of so many cultural groups. Any negative preconceived notions I’ve had about any group of people simply because I have never had the opportunity to interact with them are out the door because of my USF experience.

Global ...
Almost everything about my USF experience has prepared me for a global environment and to think globally. I have met professors, students, and individuals just visiting from across the globe. Some just sharing personal stories and some coming to raise awareness about a topic or issue but all broadening my horizons and understanding that though we are on different chunks of land with different experiences/ beliefs we are all interconnected.
