Non F-1 Visa Students

In addition to Pending Permanent Resident Aliens, there are other types of international applicants who do not need an F-1 visa to pursue their studies in the United States. These are applicants who have been granted indefinite stay in th U.S., or hold a visa type that allows them to go to school at American institutions, and include:

  • Political Asylees
  • Refugees
  • A-3 visa holder (immediate family of ambassador, public minister, or career diplomatic, etc)
  • G-1 visa holders (Representative of international organization or immediate family)
  • H-1B visa holders (temporary workers)
  • K visa holders (fiancee of U.S. citizen)

If you are unsure if your visa type allows you to study in the United States, please contact the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for information.

Unlike F-1 students, these applicants do not need to submit financial documents verifying their ability to fund their studies. However, non F-1 visa holders must provide copies of all immigration documents issued to them related to their immigration status within the U.S., and are still required to check in with International Student and Scholar Services before they will be allowed to register for classes if they are admitted.

Examples of Immigration Documents that Should be Submitted by non F-1 Visa Holders

  • Copy of Passport
  • Copy of I-94 Card
  • Copy of Work Permit issued by the BCIS
  • Copy of Visa

Application deadlines for non F-1 applicants are also later than those for students requiring an I-20, since these applicants are already in the United States and do not need to apply for an F-1 visa in their home countries. See Application Deadlines for more information.
