New F-1 Visa Students

Any foreign national who wishes to come to the United States solely to pursue his or her education must have an F-1 visa to enter the U.S. The admitting institution issues the student an I-20, or Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status, with which the student applies to the U.S. embassy in her or her country to receive the F-1 visa.

In order for the University to issue an I-20 the student must:

  1. be accepted to a degree-seeking program at the University, such as a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree

  2. provide proof of sufficient financial resources to fund a full-time course of study at the University (see Financial Support Requirements Form for complete information)

For further assistance with the application process and information specific to your country, please contact your local U.S. Embassy/U.S. Consulate/Office of Public Affairs for referral to an overseas educational advising center near you, or consult the list available on the U.S. Department of State’s website.
