OUTDOOR TRAINING

Outdoor Physical Education for credit Courses 

In the fall our staff teaches Flat water Canoeing and Outdoor Experience.  In the Spring, our staff teaches Sea Kayaking and Outdoor Experience.  Look on Oasis to sign up for these great courses under PEM 2930!

Fall Courses:

    Flat water Canoeing:  Under the expert tutelage of Cathy Stedman, one of the Outdoor Recreation Coordinators, you will learn the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully and safely operate a canoe.  Emphasis in this course will be placed on stroke technique to better enhance you appreciation and mastery of the canoe.

    Outdoor Experience:  In Outdoor Experience you will be introduced to a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, and will demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and successfully plan, equip and execute their own outdoor adventure/ experience.  Emphasis will be placed on developing hard skills necessary to a successful outdoor experience and particular emphasis will be placed on development of class team dynamics and expedition behavior.  In this semester of the Outdoor Experience course we will focus on dry land activities such as the Challenge Course, trip planning, orienteering, geocaching, and rappelling.  You will take an overnight backpack trip late in the semester to help all of your skills come together. This class is taught by Brett Morgan one of the Outdoor Recreation Coordinators

Spring Courses:

    Sea kayaking: Under the guidance of Brett Morgan, one of the Outdoor Recreation Coordinators, you will learn the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully and safely operate a kayak.  Emphasis in this course will be placed on stroke technique to better enhance your appreciation and master of the kayak.  You will also be taught wet exits and kayak rescues.

    Outdoor Experience: This semester of Outdoor Experience is taught by Cathy Stedman.  In it you will be introduced to a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, and will demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and successfully plan, equip and execute their own outdoor adventure/ experience.  Emphasis will be placed on developing hard skills necessary to a successful outdoor experience and particular emphasis will be placed on development of class team dynamics and expedition behavior.
