The training of psychology interns fits naturally into the ongoing
operations of a university counseling center.
Philosophy, Expectations, & Phases
The Predoctoral Internship Program in Professional Psychology at the University of South Florida Counseling Center represents a vital component in the overall functioning of the Counseling Center. The program adheres to a practitioner-scholar model of psychological training and service delivery. The practitioner-scholar internship training model emphasizes the integration and application of critical thinking and skillful reflection across a broad range of experiential activities at all three levels of intervention (primary, secondary, and tertiary). Education and training consistent with this model necessitates exposure to a wide variety of supervisory styles and theoretical orientations. Thus, opportunities have been developed for interns to gain familiarity or proficiency in a wide range of psychological activities in different health service settings under the supervision of a diverse group of licensed psychologists in the Counseling Center and in our affiliated training agencies. The preparation and rigor required to maintain excellence in training, coupled with the intellectual and interpersonal stimulation provided by interns, motivate staff to keep their knowledge of psychological literature current and their practical skills sharp.
