VA Work-Study Program

A student who is receiving VA benefits under Chapter 30, 31, 32, 35, 1606 or 1607, and attending at least 3/4 time may be eligible to participate in the VA Work-Study Program. The student may work up to 25 hours per week during an academic term at minimum wage (non-taxable). The hours are scheduled around your classes during the day. Please complete the VA Work-Study Application form and the VA Work-Study Contract . For more information call or stop by Veterans Services. Both on and off campus work sites are available upon request.

Advance Payment

The VA's advance pay program was developed to provide an early benefits check to assist students in paying registration/book expenses at the beginning of the academic term. The advance payment check consists of the portion of the initial month of the enrollment period plus the full following month's allowance. The advance payment check is sent directly to USF's Veterans Services, SVC 2127, and may be picked up as early as 30 days prior to the first week of classes. Proof of identity, as well as proof of registration in classes is required. The next scheduled check would be sent to the student.

Requirements:

  1. Have at least 30 days after the end of your prior enrollment period and not be eligible for benefits for that interval.
  2. Anticipate enrolling at least half-time
  3. If you are a new or returning student, you must be accepted for admission/readmission as a degree-seeking student.
  4. Submit a signed and dated Advance Payment Request Form (pdf) requesting advance pay to Veterans Services, as well as completing other VA paper work.
Check with Veterans Services for deadline dates for submitting requests, since all requests for advance pay must be received at the VA Regional Office no later than 30 days in advance and no sooner than 120 days from the first day of class.

Deferment of Tuition and Fees

There are two types of state tuition deferments available to VA students at USF. The first is an ENTITLED deferment, which all VA students may receive once during the school year (the year starts with the fall term and runs through the end of the next summer term). The other is a DELAYED deferment that is given to the VA student who will have a delay in receiving benefits through no fault of the student's. With both types of deferments there is a deadline to pay tuition and fees. The deadline for requesting tuition deferments is the last day of the first week of class. It can be up to 60 days (as determined by the Cashier's Office) from the start of classes. Students must request a VA deferment, they are not automatically given. To determine eligibility, contact Veterans Services during registration.

VA Tutorial Assistance

Veterans, eligible dependents, and reservists who are registered on at least a half-time basis are eligible to receive up to a lifetime maximum of $1,200 tutorial assistance prorated at a maximum of $100 per month. The VA student must obtain two forms from Veterans Services for the signatures of his or her instructor/advisor, and the person who performs the tutoring. (See Required Forms) These forms insure that the student does, in fact, need tutorial assistance in the required course and that the tutor is qualified. Although tutorial assistance is payable for graduate subjects, this should occur only rarely and additional justification for the tutorial sessions must be given. A charge to entitlement will be made for assistance received in excess of $600 by Chapter 30, Chapter 32, Chapter 35, and Chapter 1606 students. Chapter 31 students should contact their counselor.
