Attitudes and Alternatives Program
The Attitudes and Alternatives Program (AAP) is an educational service offered to members of the USF community who are concerned about their own alcohol and/or drug use.

The AAP requires approximately five hours over a one month time period, during which the participant will complete an individual interview, several questionnaires and assignments, and receive feedback and guidance specific to his or her circumstances.

The program is confidential. It is designed to enhance the individual’s understanding of his or her alcohol and/or drug use, and his or her ability to make desired changes. Participation in the AAP is voluntary for those interested in learning more about their own alcohol and/or drug use, and mandatory for those referred for violation of USF’s alcohol and other drug policy. Interested individuals may call the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at 974-2677 for an appointment.

Please Note: The AAP does not fulfill the requirements of
court-ordered substance abuse programs or DUI Counter Attack School.

The Attitudes and Alternatives Program consists of four components:
The AAP Participation and Referral Process
  1. Initial interview. This 50-minute, one-on-one interview includes careful examination of the participant's history, pattern and severity level of substance use, and his or her motivations for continued use.
  2. Testing session. In this two-hour testing session, the participant completes psychological tests chosen to clarify his or her experience. These instruments generate comprehensive profiles of factors relating to substance use and general life stressors.
  3. Several short homework assignments are given to expand on the material covered in this interview.
  4. Exit interview. This 50-minute, one-on-one session brings together all of the information that the participant has provided and received during the previous AAP activities. The participant receives feedback about his or her substance use patterns, risk factors, and basic information about drug and alcohol effects. Discussion about aspects related to his or her motivation to reduce the risks involved with his or her substance use is addressed.

For voluntary participation, interested individuals may call the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse to set up an appointment (974-2677).

The referral process for individuals found in violation of USF's alcohol and other drug policy is as follows:

  1. The designated referral agent (a member of the university staff) meets with the individual following the alcohol or other drug violation. He or she discusses the infraction, describes the AAP and referral process, and completes an AAP referral form. The referral agent keeps one section of the form, routes one section to the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse, and gives one section to the participant.
  2. It is the participant's responsibility to contact the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse within 48 hours to set up the initial interview. An answering machine is always on line when staff members are unavailable to take the call.
  3. Unsatisfactory completion of the AAP (e.g., failing to contact the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse within 48 hours, no-showing for scheduled appointments, noncompliance with program requirements), is communicated to the referral agent. Further disciplinary action is taken at the agent's discretion.
  4. Successful completion of the AAP is communicated to the referral agent. Other than participation status, all information provided by the participant during the course of the program is strictly confidential and is not communicated to the referral agent at any time.
