The federal definition of an independent
student for financial aid purposes, is someone who
meets one of the following for academic year 2009-2010:

You were born before January 1, 1986? or;

At the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, you will be working on a Master’s or Doctoral degree, or;
-
As of the date the application is filed you are married; or;
-
You have children who receive more than half of their support from you, or;
-
You have dependents other than your children or spouse, who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2010, or;
-
When you were 13 or older both your parents were deceased, you were in foster care, or you were a dependent/ward of the court, or;
-
You are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training, or;
-
You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, or;
-
As of today, you are an emancipated minor as determined by a court in your state of legal residence, or;
-
As of today, you are in legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence, or;
-
At any time on or after July 1, 2008, your high school or school district homeless liaison determined that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless, or;
-
At any time on or after July 1, 2008, the director of an emergency shelter program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determined that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless, or;
-
At any time on or after July 1, 2008, the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determined that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of
being homeless?
If you do not meet one of the specific conditions listed above, but have a permanently broken relationship with your parents, due to extenuating circumstances beyond your control, you may meet with a financial aid counselor to determine whether you qualify to file an Extenuating Circumstances Petition to apply for aid as an independent student for 2009-2010.
