Title Graphic: A Student's Guide to Alternative Enrollment

Alternative Enrollment includes:

  • Cross Enrollment

  • Transient Study

  • Study Abroad

  • National Student Exchange

Each of the above programs have a contract that outlines your responsibilities as a participant in an alternative enrollment program.  You are required to submit a copy of your academic transcript to USF at the end of each semester of Alternative Enrollment.  You will not be eligible to receive financial aid in the future until your transcript is received and processed by USF.

Policy

The Office of Financial Aid will assist University of South Florida degree seeking students in receiving financial aid funds while participating in alternative enrollment programs.

Some financial aid programs have restrictions, which can reduce or cancel eligibility when alternative enrollment is involved.

  • You must provide documentation to the Office of Financial Aid in order to determine financial aid eligibility while enrolled in an alternative enrollment program of study.

  • It is your responsibility to provide this documentation and to know and understand eligibility requirements.

NOTE: Financial aid for non-USF courses will not disburse until after USF’s drop/add period has ended. No additional funding will be provided for students that are participating in an alternative enrollment program.

Cross Enrollment

This is partial enrollment at another institution during the same semester you are enrolled at USF. You must be enrolled in a minimum of six USF credit hours while enrolled at another institution. You must also be classified as an undergraduate degree seeking student at USF and in good academic standing. You must obtain approval from your USF academic advisor to cross enroll at another institution. The approved non-remedial course credits must transfer back toward your USF degree for you to be eligible to receive financial aid. A signed and completed Cross Enrollment Contract is required.

Transient Study

Transient study is when you are enrolled in zero USF credit hours while enrolled at least half-time at another institution. You must remain classified as degree seeking at USF and be considered in good academic standing during this time. You must have successfully completed at least one term of enrollment at USF. You must obtain approval from your USF academic advisor to be considered transient at another institution. The approved course credits must transfer back toward your USF degree for you to be eligible to receive financial aid. A signed and completed Consortium Agreement for Transient Study is required.

Study Abroad

Your eligibility for financial aid while participating in study abroad is the same as for enrollment in a standard program of study. You must be classified as degree seeking at USF and be in good academic standing. If you need funds for purchase of airfare, deposit on an overseas study program, or other related expenses, prior to USF’s scheduled disbursement dates, consider pursuing a private loan.

  1. If you will be registered in USF courses while you are participating in Study Abroad, financial aid will be based on your actual enrollment in USF courses.
  2. If you will be registered in courses at another school while you are participating in Study abroad, you will need to submit:
    • A signed and completed Study Abroad Financial Aid Contract.
    • Verification of enrollment after you have started each term of enrollment that corresponds to a USF semester.
      • The verification of enrollment must be on the institution's letterhead, list each course you are taking along with the U.S. credit hour equivalency, and be signed by an authorized administrator at the visited school.
