Intended audience: USF employees. Part of the Fundamentals of Supervision Certificate Program.

Description: Participants will engage in activities and conversations that highlight common challenges faced by people seeking to create, achieve, or solve problems together. In particular the activities and conversations highlight the need for partners in dialogue to: be curious about the perspectives of others, contribute their own perspectives, and seek win-win solutions when priorities appear on the surface to be mutually exclusive.

Objectives: Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of purposeful conversations in achieving work objectives
  • Identify high stakes conversations at work and take steps to improve results
  • Adapt communication to fit the needs of a given situation and the conversation’s purpose
  • Recognize their own communication habits

Agenda: Communication in Context: Identifying high stakes conversations. Define the purpose and goals of dialogue. Review practices that facilitate dialogue, ways of talking and listening that help to:

  • Increase clarity
  • Avoid misunderstanding
  • De-escalate defenses
  • Establish trust
