Under the leadership of Dr. George R. Newkome, Vice President for Research, the University of South Florida Research Council established the Pride Fellowship in honor of longtime faculty member Dr. Richard F. Pride, who devoted his career to helping minority students succeed in higher education. During his USF career, Dr. Pride assisted thousands of disadvantaged and minority students in reaching their academic potential.

Dr. Pride served some 20 years on the faculty of the USF College of Education. He was the founding director of the Upward Bound program at USF. The Upward Bound program specifically targets under-represented groups and introduces them to the university experience. When asked how the Fellowship being named in his honor affected him personally, Dr. Pride declared, “I am totally surprised and elated. I never perceived that my love and dedication for helping high school students would warrant such a prestigious honor. It helped me realize that my efforts were not in vain.”
