International Employees

There are several types of Visas that allow foreign nationals to work at USF.  Below is information about the most common at USF.  If you have questions about employing a foreign national, contact your Appointment Representative or the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office.  ISSS is USF's resource for information about employing non-citizens.

Assigning Temporary Non-Resident Alien Identification Numbers

All non-resident aliens employees must complete the Foreign National Information Form immediately upon hire for inclusion in the appointment package. 

F-1
  issued to students who have been accepted to study at USF
  form I-20, which describes the course of study and the length of time approved for study (serves as Employment Authorization Document)
  students must be enrolled for at least 12 undergraduate credit hours or 9 graduate credit hours Fall and Spring semester (they are not required to enroll in classes each summer)
  students may work on campus up to 20 hours per week (they may work up to 40 hours per week during semester breaks and holidays)
  students who have completed their studies may work full time on or off campus for one year in "practical training"
  students must have a valid Social Security Number to be eligible to work.  Social Security Numbers that begin with "999" are not valid for employment.
J-1
  may be a student or a short-term scholar, professor, researcher or specialist
  if a student, must be enrolled full time and can work up to 20 hours per week
  if a short-term scholar, professor, researcher or specialist, can work full time and attend school part time
  ISSS issues a form IAP-66, which describes the type of work or area of study allowed (serves as Employment Authorization Document)
  must have a valid Social Security Number to be eligible to work.  Social Security Numbers that begin with "999" are not valid for employment.
  contact ISSS for information on sponsoring a research scholar
H-1B
  temporary worker in a specialty occupation
  work authorization (form I-797A) is for a specific professional-level job for which a search has been conducted
  must have a valid Social Security Number to be eligible to work.  Social Security Numbers that begin with "999" are not valid for employment.
TN (Trade NAFTA)
  for citizens of Canada and Mexico
  for a specific professional-level job for a specified amount of time
  must have a valid Social Security Number to be eligible to work.  Social Security Numbers that begin with "999" are not valid for employment.
