Building Communication Skills

Any relationship that is successful takes time and effort but is worth pursuing. Whether you are building new ones or maintaining old ones, the key is to be yourself and communicate your expectations. The good news is that you always have an opportunity to create new and healthy relationships. You may find people in your classes, residence hall, or at a social event with whom you have a great deal in common. And where there is difference, there is a chance to expand your worldview. As mentioned earlier, getting involved with campus events, activities, and/or organizations can only improve your relationship with others and with yourself and it will also help you feel connected to the University community.

Building Effective Communication Skills

Regardless of the relationship, communication can "make or break" things.

Being open, honest, in a respectful way along with intentional listening can create and maintain healthy relationships. But how do you make this happen?

  • Be aware of your own and other people's non-verbal communication.
  • Listen, listen, and Listen.
  • Use "I" statements.
  • Be assertive.
  • Understand the different multi-communication channels and what channel you, as well as the other person communicates on.
